General Store (Click to See More)
Our General Store is a replica of the typical Country Store of the period encompassed by Clover Hill Village (approx. 1820-1920). There were many such stores throughout the County that served the needs of a rural population.
The General Store was the center of commerce and most daily social activity. It was the place local residents bought the necessities they could not fashion for themselves or found it more expedient to purchase.
Saturdays was the most popular day to catch up on gossip and news at the General Store. Winter days and rainy weather also favorite times to gather at the "Country Store."
Visitors, not shopping, may want to try their hand at a game of checkers which was a popular way of passing the time on visits to the store. Another favorite pastime was to sit in a rocker on the porch and exchange news with fellow visitors. Out back of the store, you might pick up a lively game of pitching horse shoes.
Post Office
The General Store usually housed the local post office and ours is no exception. The post office is typical of the period with postmaster's desk, scales and memorabilia associated with the Nebraska, Virginia or West Appomattox Post Office.
The Historical Society offers special post cards to commemorate your visit. They are collected, stamped "Clover Hill Village" with the date of your visit. They will be mailed daily from Appomattox.
